Harlingen, city and country

The formation of the landscape from prehistoric times to the present

Much has been written about the history of the city of Harlingen, but much less is known about the landscape in and around Harlingen. Actually quite strange, because the city is located in a special and unique salt marsh landscape along the Wadden Sea. That is why the municipality took the initiative to draw up a landscape biography, which formed the guideline for this exhibition.

Harlingen, city and country is a journey through time that shows the formation of our landscape from the Pleistocene – which covers a period of approximately 2.6 million years to approximately 11,700 years ago – to our modern times. Using soil finds such as mammoth teeth, unique valuables, but also plant remains, we bring the lost landscape to life. The first settlement took place when people discovered how to protect themselves against the water. New aerial photographs and historical maps provide new insights. We also highlight prominent Harlingen figures who played a decisive role in the development of the landscape.

Landscape formation from prehistoric times to the present. And what will our landscape look like in a thousand years? Harlingen, city and country is a varied and surprising exhibition about earthly matters.

Including walks and cycle routes, an educational programme including a treasure hunt and an audio tour recorded by children.
