The past in painting
Around 1800 the German portrait painter Henrickus Baur opened an art gallery in Harlingen. There his son Nicolaas who was a talented seaacape painter also sold his paintings. Take a look and see which paintings were sold in those days. Elsewhere in the museum you can also see paintings linked to Harlingen such as the pair of portraits of Claes Jurjen Fontein and his wife Antje Reiners Jeddema, painted in 1648. The later Hague school of painters is represented by W.G.F.Jansen (1871-1949), an accomplished painter with an impressive body of work. His loosely painted townscapes give a good idea of the times. Jacob Adriaensz. Backer (1609-1651) was also a gifted artist. He is the most important of all the Harlinger painters. The museum shows his impressive painting of Granida and Daifilo, two figures from a play by P.C.Hooft./p>
